In recent years, global mobile payment has been in rapid growth. Although the growth of domestic user scale has gradually slowed down, the mobile payment market led by Tencent and Ali has begun to launch overseas in order to seek new growth power points.

Recently, Beijing Ipsos Market Consulting Co., Ltd (hereinafter referred to as Ipsos) released a Third-Party Mobile Payment User Research Report for the First Half of 2018 (hereinafter referred to as the Report).

The Report pointed out that, as projected by the survey, the scale of mobile payment users was about 890 million. Among them, there are 820 million users of Caipaitong and 650 million users of Alipay, and the user penetration rates of Caipaitong and Alipay are 85.4% and 68.7% respectively.

The pattern of "three-legged tripod" is gradually becoming established.

With today's third-party payment ushered in the "broken direct link", the overall domestic payment pattern is undergoing cracks. Previously, the third-party payment market dominated by Alipay and Paypal began to usher in the impact of the "national team" UnionPay.


This impact is the first fermentation from public transportation. A data show that in the past time, Alipay electronic bus card has been opened in more than 70 cities, mainly distributed in East China (Shandong, Zhejiang), North China and other places. Tencent ride code has also captured more than 70 cities, mainly in South China, Southwest and Northeast China.


UnionPay with flash payment NFC and two-dimensional code two-pronged, relying on the strength of the government and traditional commercial banks, has taken 13 cities of the subway network and more than 370 cities and counties of the public transport system, in the regional coverage of the temporary advantage.


In addition, several giants have also begun to implement mobile payment overseas strategy. It is reported that Alipay has been in Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States, more than 30 countries and regions to access more than 200,000 offline merchants, and in nine of these countries and regions with local brands to complete the layout of the local wallet.


WeChat Pay of Caipaitong has increased its access to 40 countries and regions, supports direct settlement of 13 foreign currencies, and has obtained a payment license in Malaysia.


UnionPay's cooperation network outside China is even more extensive, with the UnionPay card acceptance network extended to 168 countries and regions, and the layout of cell phone flash payment and QR code payment being accelerated, which is now supported by merchants in more than 10 countries and regions.


Record high annual transaction scale, mobile payment is the norm


According to Ipsos survey, in the last three months, the utilization rates of the four major categories of payment scenarios are: 95% for personal category, 86% for offline consumption, 82% for online consumption, and 20% for financial category.


The utilization rates of the first three categories of scenarios remain high. In terms of city level, the user penetration rates of first-tier, second-tier and third-tier cities were 90.4%, 93.5% and 92.4% respectively. Based on the survey data projection, the annual transaction scale of third-party mobile payment reached 106.78 trillion yuan.

On a per capita basis, each user makes about 148,300 yuan of cell phone payments per year, once again verifying the fact that mobile payments are continuously integrated into residents' lives and have become the most popular payment method. At the same time, with about 3 payments per capita per day, mobile payment has become commonplace for most residents.


Scenario Payment Development Status and Expectations


On the other hand, although mobile payment has penetrated all aspects of people's lives in various scenes, it was found by this survey that the utilization rates of personal, offline consumption and online consumption categories all remain high.


The utilization rate of financial transactions is still low and has not achieved growth, which is still only the demand of a small portion of people, and is also a strongly regulated area, which to a certain extent will affect the use of enthusiasm.


Among them, individual human transactions involve multiple high-frequency payment scenarios, such as phone bill recharge, transferring money and sending red packets are the three specific scenarios with the highest mobile payment utilization rate, reaching 69%, 63% and 60% respectively.


Compared with the survey in November 2017, the user utilization rate and transaction amount share of financial payment have not been significantly improved. However, the importance of the financial payment field to the development of the mobile payment industry has never been ignored by players in the field, and has always been regarded as the future winnings of mobile payment.

In the future, with the development of new retail and the underlying technology of mobile payment, such as biometrics, blockchain and big data technology, the offline scene will usher in a new round of reconstruction, and the payment entrance is becoming increasingly large-scale, and mobile payment will also usher in a new profit explosion period.
